The role of faith and the community in responding to domestic abuse

We often hear from professionals about the need to improve their communication and support of grassroots and community projects that work on domestic abuse and related VAWG practices. Services have felt a gap in their ability to support survivors, and enable families and communities to respond to DVA effectively. We know from domestic homicide reviews and survivors’ accounts that family and social networks such as  faith institutions and the community play a key role in responding to domestic abuse.

What, if anything, can you do to enable marginalised and “hard to hear” communities to combat VAWG and DVA? Are there practical suggestions and strategies that can help you embed a more intersectional approach when working with minoritised and faith communities?

The event will explore 3 thematic areas:
‘Building Bridges’ which will highlight effective models of engagement with different communities and how to gain and sustain the community’s trust.

‘Integrity’ which will delve into how not to reinforce discriminatory stereotypes around different communities, particularly when dealing with violence against women and girls.

The third theme will be ‘Empowerment’  where you will hear from different grassroots organisations tackling gender-based violence and abuse who have been working with Standing Together’s SAFE Communities Programme.

The conference is FREE to DVCN members and £75 for non-members.
