DVCN Conference

In response to the upcoming theme for the joint targeted area inspections, ‘Children Living with Domestic Abuse’, this event will bring together national experts and up-to-date evidence on how best to meet the needs of children who are living with coercive control.
The extent and impact of domestic abuse on children is well documented. Children’s experiences and voices, however, remain largely underrepresented in both policy and practice.
The first part of the day will specifically look at access to justice and children’s rights in the context of court ordered contact. Perpetrators often use post-separation child contact arrangements as a means of continuing the intimidation, control and abuse. How can we ensure that children's voices are being listened to? What needs to change for children’s rights and safety to be at the core of decisions about court-ordered contact? These questions are even more pressing following the recent report on 19 child homicides.
The second part of the event will focus on the process of recovery. It will delve into children’s experiences of coercive control and how often children and mothers can act as ‘recovery promoters’ for one another. Finally, the benefits of a trauma informed approach will be explored. Guidance for joint targeted area inspections on the theme: children living with domestic abuse can be found here.
